A Nation of Sports Gamblers?
10 July 2006
So why are the US powers that be so against online sports betting and gambling?
1. It isn't a question of morals as some self righteous 'regulators' would have you believe. Casinos populate many
states in our country and attract millions of US citizens every year. We also have something called the lottery -
which in terms of odds is probably the worst bet you can make.
2. It isn't that the government are just trying to protect US citizens against unscrupulous operators - sure there have been
reports of 'bad' offshore companies. But there are corrupt companies fleecing customers and employing immoral business practices
from Wall Street to Honolulu.
3. It isn't that the Government wishes to protect it's citizens from the 'terrors' or 'addiction' of gambling. Lets face it, liquor is readily available
across the country, as are cigarettes. 'Questionable' drugs are available in every pharmacy in the nation. Candy, junk food, and soda are virtually promoted in
school cafeterias turning our children obese.
The social
fabric of our society is far more likely to be torn apart by these available products, than by having a bet on the
football on a Monday night.
So why then is there such an issue with online gambling? It's because the US govenment can not make any money out of it! No taxes! So they
use the moral crusade angle instead.
Some facts and figures:
The online gambling business generated $12 billion in revenue in 2005.
It is believed that well over 30% of male college students gamble on sport.
70% of adults in America placed some sort of bet in the last 12 months.
And why not!
