"Betting NFL Football Halves"

- 15 June 2006

Its no small mathematical sum to work out the odds of an NFL football team winning a game when they are e.g. trailing on home turf by 14-7, having lost a key center to injury, with half an hour to go. But in sports and football gambling it allows sportsbooks to offer another market opportunity for the customer.

Of course you need to look at the full game line as a guide as well as the first half performance. Yet what the line 'should' be in reality is probably the least of it. Most of the criteria concerning the setting of the second half line (or any line for that matter) will come from the betting patterns of the general public. The final line will ultimately depend on how the betting action comes in from the guy on the steet.

The sportsbook can use the second half market to help even up any inbalance in action they may have received on full game betting.

Second half betting is quite popular - and punters tend to go for the favorite more than the underdog. The average guy doesn't pay enough attention to the odds being offered - he just sees a team winning the game and only half an hour to go - and that is a big influence on his decision. There is more 'comfort' in betting the second half - because you already know how the first half has gone.

The more informed bettor placing big bets is often using second half betting opportunities to hedge is original position and come out ahead whatever the outcome. With big bets this practice is worthwhile.

For the pro or more shrewd bettor - there is often value to be had by going against the favorite. Odds on the favorite are often set artificially short by the sportsbook because they know the bulk of the public's money is going to be coming in for the favorite. The odds on the non-favorite are therefore 'pushed out' and can therefore be considered a 'good price' or value position.

So there you have it. It is always worth shopping around for the best prices in the week leading up to NFL Sundays, but you might also consider betting during the game or at the half time mark.
