High Turnover of Bets

- 29 June 2006.

Contrary to popular opinion, you actually want to be betting a high volume of games in American sports. That's not to say that those who choose to be more selective are wrong, it's just that you will make more money if you bet more games, even if your 'strike rate' is lower in percentage terms.

If you pick more selectively and have a higher percentage strike rate, say at between 58% and 62%, it will be easier psychologically as you have that 'winning feeling'. Yet you will make more money if you are less selective and only achieve a strike rate of e.g. 55% - the downside of course is that it can seem like, and usually is, a long grind sometimes - as your betting becomes tightly packed with winners and losers.

Yut all things being equal, betting 500 games at 55% strike rate, will leave you far better off than betting 50 games at 60% strike rate.

One should also remember, however, that you will spend a lot more time studying for those 500 games than the 50. If you are placing big bets of say $10,000 - volume may not be an issue. If you can make 60% on 50 games you will be well in profit:

60% of 50 = 30 winning games. Mutliply 30 by $10,000 = $300,000

Take away the losing games (20 x 11,000 = $220,000) and this will give you $80,000 clear profit.

Most of us participating in football gambling or other sports betting don't have anything like that sort of money to invest, so for the majority the philosophy should be high volume, high turnover.

So where do you find those high numbers of bets? Well, although football is the most popular sport to bet on in the US, it does not really provide adequate volume. Most pros actually make their living from basketball (College and NBA) simply because they can get in on a lot of games.
